SALT LAKE CITY - Utah police say a woman used Facebook to get help after she and her 17-month-old son were held hostage at a residence for nearly five days.
Salt Lake County Jail documents say the woman posted on Saturday that she and her son would be "dead by morning" if they were not rescued. That prompted a welfare check at the home by Sandy police.
Officers arrested 33-year-old Troy Reed Critchfield and booked him into jail for investigation of aggravated kidnapping, forcible sodomy, aggravated assault, domestic violence, child abuse, animal cruelty and other charges.
He remained in jail on Monday.
It was not immediately clear whether Critchfield had an attorney.
Police say the woman hid in a closet and used a laptop to post the Facebook message.

Washington: A Southern California based doctoral research university is launching its third global residency programme next month in India and has plans to add two more in the future."The Indian Economy and the Epicentre of Globalization" is a one-week residency in Mumbai from Jan 1 to 8 for University of California, Riverside School of Business Administration undergraduate students, graduate students and alumni.
It joins similar one-week residency programmes in England and China that were started the past two years, the university announced Tuesday. Future plans call for adding programmes in Russia and Brazil.
"The programmes expose students to emerging markets and give them global experience in an academic, business and cultural environment," said Sean Jasso, who organizes the trips and is a lecturer of management at the School of Business Administration.
The programmes started in spring 2010 with a weeklong residency at the University of Oxford in England. In 2011, students returned to Oxford and added Guangzhou and Shenzhen, China in June of that year.
In 2012, students will return to those two countries and travel to India from Jan 1 to 8. The past trips and the upcoming trip to India have drawn about 80 students.
The residency in India will explore the strategic issues that US and foreign multinationals face when doing business in India. Lecture topics include India as a transitional economy, Mumbai's economy, financing in India, culture and leadership in India and India's future economic growth.
Participants will visit Tata Consultancy Service; L&T Infotech, a global IT services and solutions provider; the US Chamber of Commerce; and the National Stock Exchange.

?I have my achievers program down in Tampa, Fla., to help kids who read under their grade level. We gave out some gifts to them on Thursday,? he said. ?Then on Friday we gave out some gifts to some kids in an underprivileged community in Tampa.?
But Titus didn?t stop there. The giving continued throughout the rest of the weekend. He handed out more than 800 gifts!
?On Saturday, our church, Revealing Truth Ministries, had a 'Joy of Giving' Service, so I participated in that also. We gave out gifts to more than 450 kids, anything ranging from Xbox 360s to video games to bicycles,? the NXT Rookie explained. ?Basically, they just pulled a number and they came up and picked what they wanted from the stage. It was a really good experience.?
Finally, on Sunday, O?Neil and some of his fellow former University of Florida graduates spread holiday cheer to some of the senior members of the community.
?We closed it out with the Tampa Gator Club?s ?Elves for the Elderly.? It?s a program where we go around to different nursing homes,? he said. ?For the elderly in the Tampa Bay area who don?t have family around there, we went and gave them gifts ? some basic stuff that they needed, like socks and T-shirts. We gave them some WWE gear, as well.?
O?Neil?s motivation is simple ? it?s a way for him to give back as a thanks to those who helped him when he needed assistance.
?When I was younger, I grew up poor. I was a beneficiary of people giving in my life. Had they not done that, I would not have been able to get the few things I had as a youth,? the former NFL player explained.
?I?ve done it my whole life, doing charity work. I?ve been associated with the YMCA and the Boys & Girls Club in school because those were things I benefited from as a youth,? he said.
?So I always had it in my heart that if I had the opportunity to give back, I would. I would try to do the best with what I had. Even if I wasn?t a part of WWE, I?d still be doing it.?

Louis Vuitton is suing Warner Bros. for its use of a fake Louis Vuitton bag in The Hangover Part II, demanding that the scene in question be removed. So random.
In the film, Zach Galifianakis' Alan tells Stu not to mess with his luggage, warning, "Careful, that is ... that is a Louis Vuitton." He pronounces it Lewis. Awesome.
Louis Vuitton has issues with this, for multiple reasons:
For one, Warner Bros. never got permission to use its precious and valuable trademark. Moreover, the luggage in the movie is a knockoff, or so the brand claims.
Also awesome, if you're a viewer. Not not for L.V.
The company wants damages and an injunction prohibiting Warner Bros. from distributing the movie going forward as long as the luggage scene appears in it.
If you recall, the studio was also sued for its use of Mike Tyson's face tattoo on Ed Helms' character in the sequel, even though Tyson appeared in the original.

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 21 (HealthDay News) -- The holidays can be a particularly difficult time for people suffering from depression.
Experts from Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, part of the Loyola University Health System, said they are bracing for an increase in self-destructive behavior. They noted however, there are ways to recognize when a person is depressed and intervene before they end up in the emergency room.
"For those who have no support system, no friends, family, loved ones or even co-workers, the holidays can prove very deadly," Dr. Mark DeSilva, medical director of the emergency department at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, said in a hospital news release. "Everywhere, there are signs of gatherings, gift exchanges, happiness and love. If you are not experiencing what the rest of the world is enjoying, it is very bitter."
Although the holidays can bring out desperate acts in unstable people, he pointed out that there are usually a number of warning signs leading up to this behavior. DeSilva offered the following tips to help identify these red flags:
Anyone who recognizes these behaviors in a friend or acquaintance should reach out to that person right away, particularly if they've been hit hard by the economic downturn.
"By recognizing when a person is in trouble, and speaking out, you may not only save them a trip to the [emergency department], but also save a life," DeSilva concluded.

The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) and American Urological Association (AUA) are pleased to announce the collaborative development of the Practice Guideline for the Performance of an Ultrasound Examination in the Practice of Urology. This guideline has been developed to assist practitioners performing an ultrasound examination in the practice of urology and provides direction in the areas of kidney, bladder, prostate, scrotal and penile ultrasound. The guideline also addresses key issues relating to documentation, quality control and improvement, safety, infection control and patient education.
The AUA and AIUM are also pleased to announce collaborative development of Training Guidelines for urologists who perform ultrasound. The above guidelines serve as a roadmap for practices wishing to voluntarily seek accreditation for ultrasound through the AIUM.
"The AIUM is dedicated to ultrasound the modality, and we have a unique opportunity to associate with colleagues in multiple diverse specialties. It has been very rewarding working with the AUA to develop joint performance and training guidelines so that urologic patients will receive high quality ultrasound studies" said Harvey L. Nisenbaum, MD, AIUM Immediate Past President and key facilitator of the collaboration with the urologists.
"Urologists were pleased to participate in the development of guidelines for the ultrasound imaging studies we routinely perform in the office setting," said Pat Fulgham, MD, urologist and member of the guideline task force. "We look forward to working with the AIUM in the development of new guidelines and protocols to ensure the high quality of imaging in the practice of urology."

ROME (Reuters) ? Italy's government faces a confidence vote in parliament on Friday, called to speed up approval of a 33-billion euro ($43 billion) austerity package intended to restore financial market confidence in the euro zone's third largest economy.
Prime Minister Mario Monti's cabinet of unelected technocrats has the support of an overwhelming majority of members in both houses of parliament. This means Friday's vote in the lower Chamber of Deputies, expected to be held sometime around 1230 GMT, should pass easily.
The austerity plan will then move to the Senate, where a similar vote is expected to be held before Christmas, marking the final passage of a decree law that went into effect on December 4 but needed parliamentary approval within 60 days.
Monti's government was appointed last month to face a collapse in market confidence that put Italy at the heart of the euro zone debt crisis. He has raced to push through the package of tax increases, spending cuts and pension reform aimed at meeting Italy's goal of balancing its budget in 2013.
However, analysts say rising borrowing costs and the prospect of a fast-deepening recession still threaten to undermine Italy's deficit cutting efforts, while much of the country's fate is out of its hands, as investors react to a lack of decisive action by European leaders.
Monti's government has called the confidence votes to curtail debate on dozens of amendments to the law, many of them tabled by the opposition Northern League party.
Before Friday's vote, Monti warned that the solution to the crisis must be through a united approach rather than an attempt by northern European countries to blame those on the southern periphery - a thinly veiled criticism of Germany and its emphasis on budget rigor rather than measures to stimulate growth.
Europe's response "should be wrapped in a long-term sustainable approach, not just to feed short-term hunger for rigor in some countries," Monti told a conference of senior international financial officials in Rome.
"To help European construction evolve in a way that unites, not divides, we cannot afford that the crisis in the euro zone brings us ... the risk of conflicts between the virtuous North and an allegedly vicious South," he added.
On Thursday Emma Marcegaglia, head of the national employers' group Confindustria, said Germany should abandon its "rigid" positions because the euro itself was at risk.
RECESSION
Monti's predecessor, Silvio Berlusconi, had urged a confidence vote, saying his PDL party - the biggest in parliament - would support the government out of a sense of responsibility, not because it agrees with all the sacrifices being asked of Italians.
Both PDL and the centre-left Democratic Party have misgivings about parts of the bill but cannot sabotage the government for fear of unleashing an economic catastrophe that probably would lead to Italy defaulting on its debt.
Underlining the depth of the crisis, Confindustria forecast on Thursday that the Italian economy would shrink 1.6 percent next year, slashing its previous estimate of 0.2 percent growth,
and said the country was already in recession.
It said even this forecast was based on Italian bond yields dropping to below 5 percent by April compared with around 7 percent now - the level at which Ireland, Greece and Portugal were forced to take bailouts.
Such a rescue for the much bigger Italian economy would probably overwhelm Europe's defenses, which is why the country is in the frontline of the euro zone crisis.
The Northern League heckled Monti in parliament this week and held up placards saying: "This is not a budget, but a hold-up." They also tried to obstruct the calling of the confidence vote by filibustering in the chamber before Speaker Gianfranco Fini cut them short.

The busy mind of Newt Gingrich has been much in the news lately. He's the man of grand ideas -- a thinker, a theorist, the big brain in a GOP field of bureaucrats and simpletons. Don't believe it? Don't worry, Gingrich himself will tell you.
Gingrich's mind indeed does churn. The problem is, he approaches ideas the way a gluttonous gourmand approaches food -- with a rich, complex and subtle appetite, but also a hopeless weakness for corn dogs and Twinkies. If it's edible -- or, in his case, imaginable -- he's interested. This can be awkward, particularly when he steps outside of his comfort zone of history and public policy and starts to muck around with science. (Watch "10 Questions for Newt Gingrich.")
Much has been made of some of Gingrich's wackier ideas in the past few weeks, beginning with his oft-repeated worry that a rogue state with a nuclear weapon could shut down the U.S. power grid. To give Gingrich his due, there's a grain of truth in his fears. Scientists agree -- theoretically at least -- that a missile detonated at the right altitude could trigger what's known as an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that could fry the circuits of whatever country lay below. The one experiential data point that supports this idea occurred in 1962, when an atmospheric test of an American atomic weapon caused street lights in Hawaii to go temporarily dark.
Of course, it's a big step from there to shutting down an entire country, especially when the bad actors Gingrich imagines blacking out America are the Iranians and North Koreans, who have nowhere near the missile technology or targeting know-how to pull off such a stunt -- at least without being detected -- and in the case of Iran, don't even have a bomb yet. What's more, if either country did want to launch a strike, it would be a whole lot easier to go the point-and-shoot route -- pick a city and try to take it out directly. Yet Gingrich has continued to sound the EMP alarm, arguing that preparing for an attack should be an important part of the country's defense posture.
"In theory, a relatively small device detonated over Omaha would knock out about half the electricity generated in the United States," he warned in Iowa last week, according to the New York Times.
Gingrich's advocacy of space mirrors -- albeit years ago, in a 1984 book -- has provoked eye rolling too. The thinking is that scientists could position giant mirrors in space that would point toward Earth, reflecting sunlight downward and creating as much illumination as several full moons. This would eliminate the need for nighttime lighting on highways and brighten shadowy neighborhoods as a deterrent to crime. (Read "Newt Gingrich: Potential President, or Skilled Showman?")
Put aside what this would also do to the day-night cycle under which all life on Earth is accustomed to operating; put aside what it would do to the simple business of looking up and trying to see a star. The technical obstacles are dizzying. The U.S. has already orbited one whopping big mirror -- a slab of polished glass inside the Hubble Space telescope that measures close to 8 ft. (2.4 m) in diameter. But reflective space mirrors would have to be far bigger, perhaps the size of a football field. Even the massive International Space Station, which measures 357 ft. (109 m) across, appears to be little more than a moving star at the lowest point of its orbit, 234 mi. (376 km) above ground. To provide permanent illumination to a target area, you'd have to position your mirrors a whole lot farther away -- in geosynchronous orbit, 22,236 mi. (37,786 km) above sea level, so that their rate of revolution matches the rotation of the globe.
The weight problem alone makes this impossible -- at least if you were trying to fly a giant mirror made of glass, like the Hubble's. While University of Arizona engineers have developed mirror material only .04 in (1 mm) thick, this doesn't address other problems like the cost of launching and maintaining the mirrors, not to mention keeping so big a target safe from meteors and other space debris. All of this seems like an awful lot of trouble to go to for an illumination problem that highway lights and porch lamps already solve rather neatly.
It's Gingrich's advocacy of moon mining, however, that is getting the most attention -- and drawing the most derision -- partly because this is a drum he doesn't seem willing to quit banging. For the most part, the moon is a pretty prosaic mix of very familiar materials -- including silicon, iron, calcium, aluminum, potassium and phosphorous. There is, however, also helium-3. A light isotope of common helium, helium-3 streams toward Earth all the time as part of the storm of charged particles coming from the sun, but our planet's magnetic field deflects most of it. This is not so on the moon, which has a magnetic field far weaker than Earth's. What makes this important is that helium-3 also turns out to be a cracker jack fuel for fusion reactors -- far more efficient than the deuterium currently used. But it's not just a matter of going to the moon, scooping up what you need and powering the world on it. (Watch TIME's video "Earth Is Running Out of Helium.")
First of all, a practical fusion reactor has not yet been invented and there's no realistic projection for when it might be -- though scientists have been trying for decades. What's more, the moon's helium-3 is not just there for the taking. Apollo samples revealed that the isotope is present in lunar soil in concentrations no greater than 30 parts per billion. Harrison Schmitt, the lunar module pilot on Apollo 17 and the only geologist to walk on the moon, estimates that it would take 220 lbs (100 kg) of helium-3 to power one city the size of Dallas for one year, and to collect that much you'd have to dig a trench three quarters of a mile square by 9 ft. deep (1.9 sq km by 2.7 m).
That's a lot of digging, and it doesn't even touch the cost of getting the stuff home. Even aboard cheap rockets like the Russian Proton, it costs $2,200 to launch a pound of payload to low Earth orbit. The shuttle, nobody's idea of a bargain ship, cost $8,100 per lb. Things are a lot cheaper on the moon, where lower gravity means everything weighs less, but that doesn't mean every ounce doesn't cost -- a lot. There's a reason the skin of the Apollo lunar module was no thicker than three sheets of aluminum foil and that its windows were triangular, a shape that shaved a few ounces off of the framing and sealant that would have been needed for round windows of approximately the same size.
In the last presidential debate, Gingrich responded to Mitt Romney's criticism of the moon mining concept by not responding. "I'm happy to defend the idea that America should be in space and should be there in an aggressive, entrepreneurial way," he said -- which most people agree with and which is not what Romney was questioning at all.
Answering evasively, of course, is what politicians do, as is dreaming big dreams of New Frontiers and Great Societies and shining cities on hills. But dreams aren't science -- and politicians, for the most part, aren't scientists. Newt Gingrich may play one on TV, but that doesn't mean anyone is required to listen.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? British-born journalist and atheist intellectual Christopher Hitchens, who made the United States his home and backed the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, died on Thursday at the age of 62.
Hitchens died in Houston of pneumonia, a complication of cancer of the esophagus, Vanity Fair magazine said.
"Christopher Hitchens - the incomparable critic, masterful rhetorician, fiery wit, and fearless bon vivant - died today at the age of 62," Vanity Fair said.
A heavy smoker and drinker, Hitchens cut short a book tour for his memoir "Hitch 22" last year to undergo chemotherapy after being diagnosed with cancer.
As a journalist, war correspondent and literary critic, Hitchens carved out a reputation for barbed repartee, scathing critiques of public figures and a fierce intelligence.
In his 2007 book "God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything," Hitchens took on major religions with his trenchant atheism. He argued that religion was the source of all tyranny and that many of the world's evils have been done in the name of religion.
The son of a British naval officer, Hitchens studied at Oxford University and worked as literary critic for the New Statesman magazine in London before moving to New York to work as a journalist in 1981. He settled in Washington the following year, initially as correspondent for the left-wing magazine The Nation. He retained his British citizenship when he became an American citizen in 2007.
Hitchens was not one to mince words. In his book on Bill Clinton "No one left to lie to", he called the former U.S. president a "rapist" and a "con man." He once referred to Mother Teresa of Calcutta as a "fanatical Albanian dwarf."
The author of 25 books - including works on Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine and George Orwell - and countless articles and columns, Hitchens never lost his biting humor.
"I'm a member of a cancer elite. I rather look down on people with lesser cancers," Hitchens said in an interview with CBS "60 Minutes" aired on March 6, 2011.
In a 2010 interview with Reuters, Hitchens dismissed criticism that he moved from left to right and helped former U.S. President George W. Bush sell the 2003 war with Iraq to the American public with what turned out to be bad intelligence about weapons of mass destruction.
"Saddam was an enemy of the civilized world and he should have been taken out a long time before," Hitchens said of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. "I have no regrets about that at all."
The 2001 attacks on the United States by Islamic fundamentalists in hijacked passenger planes made Hitchens ever more critical of the role of religion in the world, and led him to appreciate the merits of American democracy.
"I am absolutely convinced that the main source of hatred in the world is religion, and organized religion," he wrote.

Maybe, just maybe, President Obama is finally shaking off his subdued demeanor and will resume the kind of soul-stirring leadership stance that carried him into office. Deliberately echoing the rambunctious Teddy Roosevelt, Obama's recent speech calling for an America that is "fair" reminded us all how powerfully he can state the case, and how powerfully we yearn for a leader who will demand the best from us and elected officials.
But, alas, he is still inept at framing the critical issues that differentiate him from the Republicans, and tone-deaf at using language that reinforces those differences.
There is a holy grail all successful marketers pursue with a passion: it is called "the involuntary head-nod." That head-nod signals that the hearer has just heard something they deeply agree with. The head-nod happens automatically, without the hearers even realizing they are nodding. It is triggered by just the right word or phrase or image that instantly reminds the listeners of what they care about.
The involuntary head-nod is never triggered by a carefully spelled-out intellectual rationale. But the President and his team don't seem to get this.
For example, in a 60 Minutes interview on Dec. 12, Steve Kroft confronted Obama, just after that TR-styled speech, and managed to splatter him with three polarizing images in just two sentences: "You were really talking about income inequality which suggests redistribution of wealth... there are going to be people who say, 'This is the socialist Obama, and he's come out of the closet.'" Three red flags in 10 seconds.
How did Obama respond? He said that everybody's concerned about income inequality and then went on to lament the difficulty of generating a common consensus of one-for-all sharing to build a strong middle class in America. His response was not only boring; it was far worse. By making the dubious assertion that "everyone" wants to redress income inequality, he tacitly agreed, "Yes, I want to tap into rich people's fortunes to beef up the middle class."
This is a total loser of a stance. The Occupy Wall Street demonstrations notwithstanding, Americans get very queasy about playing Robin Hood. We do indeed want "fair" as Obama noted, but, paradoxically, we are so fair-minded that when a proposal sounds like it could be a confiscation of somebody else's money, even from those who don't need it, we shy away from it.
Obama could have leap-frogged over Kroft's provocative language and re-framed the question on his own terms: "Steve, the Bush administration decided the richest Americans would love a cash bonus from the government, and so he told them they could just hold onto a trillion dollars that they were otherwise supposed to send to the U.S. treasury. Remember that? (Head-nod.) Giving them this gift may have seemed like a good idea at the time, but then the crash of 2008 came and we found ourselves in this ridiculous situation: on the one hand, American needs revenues worse than at any time in almost a century, right? (Head-nod.) And on the other hand, the richest Americans are sending in taxes at the lowest rate in almost a century, right? (Head-nod.) Doesn't take a genius to see what's wrong with this picture. (Head- nod.) And so all I'm saying is, the party's over. Uncle Sam is no longer your sugar daddy. No more cash gifts to the rich." (Head-nod.)
There is a world of difference between "redressing income inequality" and "cancelling a special cash bonus." Obama should reinforce the point by describing the Bush tax cuts for the rich as a "tax expenditure" -- money that would be flowing into our treasury right now except for the decision to spend it as a bonus. He should describe the termination of that supposedly "temporary" expenditure as "slashing government spending by a trillion dollars." Reclaiming these revenues is not "new taxes"; terminating these tax expenditures is exactly what everyone is crying for: reduction of government spending. (Head-nod.) We must stop spending money on everything we can't afford -- including cash gifts for the rich. (Head-nod.)
Preemptively taking charge of the framing and the language can upstage the poisonous taint of "new taxes" and "redistribution of wealth" and "socialism" and "class warfare." Obama should never, ever respond to those words at all, and especially refuse to get suckered into claiming "not guilty." He must ignore them completely and simply re-frame the issue on his own terms. If he doesn't, he loses ground. Whenever Obama and the Democrats allow themselves to discuss "making the rich pay more" and to rant about "income inequality," it unwittingly tweaks that instinctive gut-level reaction against Robin Hood-esque confiscation. It evokes the very opposite of the involuntary head nod: the involuntary head shake that says, "I don't think I agree." Even if most Americans envy the rich of their riches, almost none of us feel entitled to take it away from them. Avoiding any such perception is absolutely critical for Obama.
Similarly, Obama and his team should ban any further use of the word "regulation." It has been tainted beyond all hope of positive perception. They should employ instead the word that is the end-purpose of regulation: protection. Nobody wants regulation; but lots of us want and need protection from the manipulators who are doing their nefarious best to sell us shoddy investment vehicles they themselves are betting against or questionable foodstuffs they don't let their own families consume. We know we're completely overmatched by these manipulators' ability to hoodwink us, and we do need a skilled bodyguard to protect us when they try. (Head-nod.)
From now until November 2012, Obama and his team must put every single word of their intended utterances to the test: will it trigger an involuntary head-nod of approval or not? Sophisticated explanations cannot and will not do the job. But simply reminding Americans of what they already know and want can be absolutely magnetic.

BALTIMORE (AP) ? A renovated theater at Johns Hopkins University has been renamed for "The Addams Family" actor John Astin.
Astin starred as Gomez Addams in the television show from 1964 to 1966. He has taught at the university since 2001 and is credited with revitalizing the school's theater program.
The Baltimore Sun reports that the 104-seat John Astin Theater recently underwent a $210,000 makeover.
Astin graduated from Johns Hopkins in 1952.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -FIFA president Sepp Blatter has reportedly said that goal line technology could be implemented as early as next season.
Blatter told Bild newspaper in an interview that there are systems that are "accurate, fast and uncomplicated."
He says the International Football Association Board, which determines the rules of the sport, will discuss the technology in March 2012 and could be used in the 2012-13 season if approved.
The interview was published in Bild's online edition late Monday.

NEW YORK (AP) ? For anyone who needed official word, a new study confirms that many of us ? and the majority of young adults ? go online for no good reason at all.
The report from the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project found that on any given day, 53 percent of 18 to 29 year-olds go online just to have fun or pass time.
That should explain all those kitten videos.
The report finds that the amount of time people spend tooling around on the Web doing nothing corresponds with age. Only 12 percent of people over 65 say they went online the previous day for no particular reason. Of those aged 50 to 64, the study found 27 percent answered yes to the same question.
In all, 58 percent of all adults said that they use the Internet to pass time or have fun at least occasionally. Of adults who use the Internet, nearly three-quarters surf the Web for no reason.
The survey didn't define "fun," so people could interpret it broadly. For some people, gossip blogs might be fun, for others, they're serious research.
Pew is releasing the study on Friday. The phone survey was conducted from July 25 to Aug. 26 among 2,260 American adults.

Some parental control utilities are entirely local to the protected computer, with no remote access or configuration. Others keep all configuration and logs entirely online, relying on a small, local client to enforce the rules on each protected PC. McAfee Family Protection 2.0 ($49.95 direct for three licenses) falls right in the middle. It includes a full configuration utility on each protected PC, but you can access an identical configuration console online.
McAfee partnered with InternetSafety.com in 2009 and acquired the company in 2010. McAfee Family Safety is a re-branded version of InternetSafety's Safe Eyes 6.0 ($49.95 direct, 4 stars), and feature-wise it's almost identical.
Quick Install
After the quick, simple install, McAfee launches into a setup wizard that helps you with initial configuration. The first step is to create a McAfee online account, if you don't already have one. Next you'll define a username and password for each child. Usernames must be globally unique among all users of the product, so you won't be able to use Jason or Jennifer as a username. Get creative, then click the button to see if your choice is available.
The product automatically pre-configures default settings based on the age range you select. You can opt instead to copy settings from another user that you've already configured.
The next page summarizes protection settings in eight categories. Some are simply on or off, while others offer choices like low, medium, and high. You can customize settings on this page, but you're better off waiting until you can use McAfee's full-powered user interface. Once you repeat this process for each child, up to a maximum of ten, McAfee is ready to start.
Child Accounts
If all of your children use the same Windows account, they'll have to log in to McAfee each time they start and log out when another child takes a turn. Things are much simpler if each child has a Windows account. You log in for them one time with the username and password you created earlier and check the box to remember these credentials. Thereafter login will be automatic.
McAfee can be installed on up to three computers. By matching the child's McAfee account to the proper user account on each computer, you ensure the correct configuration in every location.
Upon logging in to the Administrator account you'll see a handy grid-style summary, with usernames across the top and 11 protection categories down the site. Clicking on any settings lets you make broad changes such as turning a feature on and off or changing its level from medium to high. Parents can also log in to a near-identical configuration screen online.
Web Content Filtering
For each child you can set website protection to high, medium, low, or custom. Choosing custom opens the Websites tab. Here you can pick and choose among the 35 available categories, whitelist or blacklist specific sites, and control whether McAfee forces safe search at popular search portals.
McAfee's content filtering is browser independent, so the kids won't evade it by finding an off-brand browser. Like Net Nanny 6.5 ($39.99 direct, 4.5 stars), WebWatcher ($169.95 direct, 4 stars), and Qustodio (Free, 3 stars) it can filter HTTPS traffic.
Filtering secure traffic is an unusual ability. Parental control tools that lack this ability can be effectively disabled by a teen using a secure anonymizing proxy. AVG Family Safety ($19.95 direct for three licenses, 4.5 stars) and Bsecure Online v6.16 ($49.95 direct for three licenses, 4.5 stars) are among the products that can't filter HTTPS traffic.
Qustodio is one of the few standalone parental control tools that can be disabled by a simple three-word network command. This weakness is more common in parental control systems bundled as part of a suite. Surprisingly, McAfee is also vulnerable. A child whose Windows account has Administrator privilege can disable McAfee's protection. Yes, it pops up a warning after reboot begging piteously to have its service turned back on? but the child can just click Ignore.
