Video: Warm weather saved money

>>> despite a few cold snaps here and there, this winter is going down as the fourth warmest in 117 years. 80% of the country has had an above normal season. you can thank the jet stream that has been stuck in place, keeping cold air far to the north. that's been good news for city budgets, jobs and businesses big and small. we get the story tonight from nbc's tom costello.

>> reporter: from 60 and 70 degree days along the east coast to the crowded links in the midwest, for much of the country it has been a snowless winter. for proof look no further than the piles of unused salt and idle plows in boston . by this time last year, boston had already dug out of 73 inches of snow. so far this year, just 7 inches. of the $17 million it budgeted for snow removal , it used only $2 million. so rather than battle snow and ice, they declared war on another boston nemesis, potholes.

>> so far this winter we filled about 2500 potholes. we have used about 200 tons of asphalt.

>> reporter: lots of cities have been saving money on plows and salt. by this time in february, new york has usually cleared 19 inches of snow. this season, it only had 7 inches. buffalo normally has 76 inches by now, this year, just 33 inches. chicago, normally 28 by now. this year, 19. minneapolis, 39 is normal. 18 inches this year. and fargo usually has had 36 inches. this year, just 16. fewer snow days mean more days on the job. construction crews at the new boston tea party ships and museum project are running ahead of schedule.

>> last year we lost over 25 working days. this year we lost three. with that translates into is real savings for owners on projects.

>> reporter: it is happening across the country, 21,000 construction jobs added in january, 31,000 in december. and all those jobs helped bring the unemployment rate down. true, the season hasn't been kind to ski resorts , tow truck operators or folks who like to ice fish . but the weather channel 's jim c cantore says the warmup may be easier.

>> we may not see the flooding we had last year on all three of the major rivers in this country.

>> reporter: expect more bugs this spring, pollen too. but at jp licks ice cream , they're not complaining.

>> we're busier, 20% up over last year.

>> reporter: licking their way to a warm, profitable winter. tom costello, nbc news, boston .

Man must apologize to wife on Facebook: court

1 day

A man with a record of domestic violence has been ordered by a Cincinnati court to apologize to his victim -- his estranged wife -- on Facebook for comments he made on the social network.

NBC-affiliate WLWT in Cincinnati reported on the unusual order, made to Mark Byron in lieu of serving 60 days in jail and paying a $500 fine for violating a temporary protection order granted to his soon-to-be ex-wife, Elizabeth Byron, for being found guilty in June of civil domestic violence against her.

On his Facebook page, Mark Byron, a photographer, had posted a portrait of himself with the couple's young son, and amongst the comments, he wrote this:?

"If you are an evil, vindictive woman who wants to ruin your husband's life and take your son's father away from him completely -- all you need to do is say that you're scared of your husband or domestic partner and they'll take him away!"

Although he blocked his estranged spouse from his page, she was able to see the photo post and the comments below it, and filed a successful motion that he violated the protection order, which prohibited him from "from causing plaintiff or the child of the parties to suffer physical and/or mental abuse, harassment, annoyance or bodily injury."

As a result,?magistrate Paul Meyers sentenced Mark Byron to the jail time and fine on Jan. 25, but added a clause that allowed the man to avoid going behind bars and paying that fine if he would pay back child support and post an apology on Facebook for 30 days, beginning Feb. 13. During that time, Elizabeth Byron or one of her friends has to be given access to check and make sure it's there.

Here is the?apology, which addresses Elizabeth Byron's concern about being seen in an unfavorable light in regards to allowing visitation to their son.

Play out your life on Facebook, and sometimes the long arm of the law will step in to make sure you're playing by the rules.

Breast Cancer? Me? My Story | Sharing Mayo Clinic

GD Star Rating
loading?

Having never been touched by any kind of cancer in any generation of my family, it came as a shock to learn of my breast cancer diagnosis confirmed at Mayo Clinic January 2012. I felt I was going through seven stages of grief in trying to reconcile this new phenomenon happening within my body. Emotionally it knocked me totally off my feet.

More importantly, what brought me upright again was the care and comfort I received at every turn in every appointment with every doctor, tech, nurse, receptionist I came into contact. Just saying the words ?I have breast cancer? brought me a whole new gush of tears.

I am a very lucky woman. To live within fifty miles of the Mayo Clinic and be able to be entrusted into Mayo?s care for my breast cancer, something I consider to be an unexpected and emotionally terrorizing diagnosis, is an experience I will never forget. At every corner my fears were allayed by the comfort and gentleness of each doctor and practitioner with every test and procedure required for the expected lumpectomy I was about to undergo. No stone was unturned in analyzing and arriving at my diagnosis. In finally meeting the surgeon in the steps of my new found journey, the act of getting ready for surgery brought the highest dose of reality to my condition. To put it mildly I was scared out of my mind.

I can?t adequately thank enough Drs. Nicole Sandhu, Marilyn Morton, Paula Schomberg, Katie Jones to name just a few of the many physicians I came in contact who ordered and performed the tests necessary in preparation for the surgeon. Their kindness and empathy was utmost and could not have been more heartfelt.

Mary with surgeon, Dr. James Jakub

The ?day of reckoning? arrived. Dr. James Jakub, the surgeon, was the best not only because of his medical talent, but also because he was the most understanding and compassionate yet I have ever encountered. In the surgical suite he held my hand, smiled down at me and calmly promised he would take good care of me. His words were the most comforting words I could have asked for in the emotional stress of what was happening to me. My fears truly were allayed and the next thing I knew, I was awake in the recovery room. It turned out to be a blessed and happy day in my life?s experiences. Kudos and bravo to Mayo Clinic who dedicates itself day after day to the caring and needs, no matter how large or small, of the patient.

Daily Bible Study: Principles Of Kingdom Living #13 CHRISTIAN ...

PRINCIPLES OF KINGDOM LIVING?

LESSON 13?
CHRISTIAN HOME AND FAMILY

Dr George Watkins

As God is bringing restoration and order to the Household of God (the Church), we find that the home plays a vital part in this visitation. In the Old Testament, the family was the corporate body of worshippers with the father as the spiritual leader and authority (Joshua 24:15).

(1) HOW IS THE CHRISTIAN HOME ESTABLISHED?

A material house does not come together without a blueprint. As Christians, the blueprint of God's Word is our guideline for establishing our home.

A. Every institution must have a proper foundation?
(Matthew 7:24-27); (Luke 6:46-49).

1. Proper foundation for the family unit is first to be "born again".
2. Not only hear the Word of God, but practice it as it relates to the family unit and relationships within the family.
B. A home must be built (Psalms 127:1); (Proverbs 14:1).

?? 1. Each member has a responsibility.
?? 2. As each member functions in his/her area of responsibility, the home will be built.

C. There must be divinely instituted government within the home (Ephesians 6:1-4); (5:22-32).?
There is a "chain of command", or order of headship, in the home, even as there is in the Church or civil government (I Corinthians 11:3); (Colossians 1:18).

(2) WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF HEADSHIP?
A. The Scriptures declare that the husband and wife are "one flesh". Thus, headship is not intended to bring about division, but unity.

B. Headship does not mean:

1. Dictatorship. 2. Inequality of men, women or children. 3. Inferiority of Woman. 4. Superiority of Man.

(3) WHAT IS MARRIAGE?

A. Covenant publicly made between a man and a woman, and God for the purpose of founding and maintaining a family.

B. Of vital interest to God. He instituted it in (Genesis 1:26-28); (2:18-25).

C. It is intended to be a life-long union that can only be dissolved by death or unfaithfulness (Romans 7:2-3). (Matthew 19:6) says, "Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder".

(4) WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE HUSBAND AND WIFE?

A. Husband:
1. He must acknowledge and confess Jesus Christ as Lord of his life.
2. He must accept that God has ordained that he be the priest and head of his?household (Ephesians 6:1-2), and that he himself is under headship
(I Corinthians 11:3).
3. He must recognize that his wife was created by God to be his help-meet; not help-mate (Genesis 2:18).

4. He must recognize that his wife is of like nature and substance?
Genesis 2:23).

5. He must leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife.

6. He must recognize that he and his wife are one, even as Christ and the Church are one:
(a) Adam (Genesis 2:23).
(b) Jesus (Matthew 19:4-6). (c) Paul (Ephesians 5:30-31).

7. He must love his wife as Christ loved the Church (Ephesians 5:2,25-31).

8. He must sacrifice for his wife; give himself even as Christ gave Himself for the Church (Ephesians 5:25).

9. He must nourish ("to promote health and strength") his wife?
(Ephesians 5:29).

10. He must cherish ("to impart warmth, foster, care for") his wife
(Ephesians 5:29).
11. Respect and honor (I Peter 3:7).
12. Live in harmony (Unity) (I Peter 3:8).

13. Have compassion (I Peter 3:8).

14. Love as a human being (I Peter 3:8).

15. Be sympathetic (I Peter 3:8).
16. Be courteous (I Peter 3:8).

17. Not retaliating (I Peter 3:9).
18. Not be abusive with his tongue (I Peter 3:10).

B. Wife

1. She must know area of responsibility. Husband and wife are equal as persons, but not equal in responsibility.
2. Must accept responsibility in the right attitude. The woman is not inferior to man; not competing with man. Husband and wife are equal in importance, but not equal in position.

3. She must have a submissive spirit (Hebrew meaning: "to come under the protection of another"), (Ephesians 5:22-24); (Colossians 3:18); (I Peter 3:1-6).
4. She must have a quiet and meek spirit (I Peter 3:1-6).
5. Modest and Godly (I Timothy 3:9-10).

6. Recognize that she and her husband are heirs together of the Grace of life (I Peter 3:7).
7. The wife is the help-meet; the complement to her husband (Genesis 2:18).
8. Love her husband and children (Titus 2:4).
9. Avoid the sin of nagging (Proverbs 19:13); (21:9); (27:15).

A marriage must pivot around the will of God and the purpose of God for their lives. When a couple is married, they begin the adventure of "oneness". It can only be encountered as they both love God and one another. They must serve Him. They cannot follow two independent courses of action.

(5) WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT CHILDREN?

A. They are the heritage of the Lord (Psalms 127:35).

B. They are the reward of the Lord (Psalms 127:3); (Genesis 33:5); (Psalms 113:9).

C. They are highly esteemed by God (Psalms 127:4-5) (128:3); (Matthew 19:14).
D. They are a crown (Proverbs 17:6).

(6) WHAT ARE THE SCRIPTURAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF PARENTS?

A. They must bring their children to Jesus Christ (Matthew 19:13-14); (Mark 10:13).
B. Parents must:
1. Love God 2. Study His Word. 3. Teach His children to do the same (Deuteronomy 6:5-7).
C. Parents must administer Correction when needed:

1. Correction is an act of love (Proverbs 13:24).
2. Correction will drive out foolishness (Proverbs 22:15):
(a) Foolishness, if not corrected, will produce pride (Proverbs 14:3).
(b) Foolishness and Pride yield:

(1) Contention (Proverbs 13:10).
(2) Strife (Proverbs 28:25).
(3) Brings him low (Proverbs 29:23).

(4) Shame (Proverbs 11:2); (29:15). 3. Withholding correction will destroy a child (Proverbs 23:13-14).
D. Parents are to train their children (Proverbs 22:6).
Definition of train: "to bring to a requisite standard, as of conduct or skill, by protracted and careful instruction; specifically, to mold the character of;educate; instruct; to render skillful or proficient." E. Parents are not to provoke their Children, but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4); (Colossians 3:21). F. Children can be worshippers of God (Matthew 21:15-16).

(7) WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CHILD TOWARDS HIS PARENTS? A. Children are to honor their parents (Deuteronomy 5:16); (Ephesians 6:2-3). B. Children are to obey their parents:
1. In God (Ephesians 6:1); (Deuteronomy 30:2); (Proverbs 1:8) (6:20).
2. In All Things (Colossians 3:20).

Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde, left, speaks with Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos during a round table meeting of eurozone finance ministers at the EU Council building in Brussels on Monday, Feb. 20, 2012. Eurozone governments will likely approve on Monday a long-elusive rescue package for Greece, saving it from a potentially calamitous bankruptcy next month, senior officials said. But finance ministers meeting in Brussels will have a few last issues to wrangle over, such as tighter controls over Greece's spending and further cuts to the country's debt load. (AP Photo/Yves Logghe)AP - A second, euro130 billion ($172 billion) bailout and a deep debt write-off for financially stricken Greece will ward off a financial disaster in Europe.

(AP) ? She was instantly recognizable for the eye patch that hid a shrapnel injury ? a testament to Marie Colvin's courage, which took her behind the front lines of the world's deadliest conflicts to write about the suffering of individuals trapped in war.

After more than two decades of chronicling conflict, Colvin became a victim of it Wednesday, killed by shelling in the besieged Syrian city of Homs.

Colvin, 56, died alongside French photojournalist Remi Ochlik, the French government announced. Freelance photographer Paul Conroy and journalist Edith Bouvier of Le Figaro were wounded.

Colvin, from East Norwich, New York, had been a foreign correspondent for Britain's Sunday Times for more than 25 years, making a specialty of reporting from the world's most dangerous places. The newspaper posted her final dispatch outside the website's paywall, so anyone could read her account from a cellar offering refuge for women and children. The report chronicled the horrors that eventually took her own life.

"It is a city of the cold and hungry, echoing to exploding shells and bursts of gunfire," Colvin wrote. "There are no telephones and the electricity has been cut off. ... Freezing rain fills potholes and snow drifts in through windows empty of glass. No shops are open, so families are sharing what they have with relatives and neighbors. Many of the dead and injured are those who risked foraging for food.

"Fearing the snipers' merciless eyes, families resorted last week to throwing bread across rooftops, or breaking through communal walls to pass unseen."

Colvin often focused on the plight of women and children in wartime, and Syria was no different. She gave interviews to major British broadcasters on the eve of her death, appealing for the world to notice the slaughter taking place.

"I watched a little baby die today," she told the BBC on Tuesday. "Absolutely horrific, a 2-year old child had been hit. They stripped it and found the shrapnel had gone into the left chest and the doctor said 'I can't do anything.' His little tummy just kept heaving until he died."

In the 1990s, Colvin worked in the Balkans, where she went on patrol with the Kosovo Liberation Army as it engaged Serb military forces. She worked in Chechnya, where she came under fire from Russian jets while reporting on Chechen rebels seeking independence for their region. She also covered the conflict in East Timor after its people voted for independence in Southeast Asia.

She was one of the few reporters to interview ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi in his final days before his death in October. Her mother, Rosemarie Colvin, of East Norwich, N.Y., told The Associated Press that her daughter knew Gadhafi well, and described her daughter as a passionate about her work, even when it got very hard.

"She was supposed to leave (Syria) today," Rosemarie Colvin said, adding that her daughter had spoken yesterday with her editor who ordered her to leave because it was so dangerous. "She had to stay. She wanted to finish one more story."

The eldest of five children, Colvin is survived by her mother, two sisters and two brothers. Rosemarie Colvin invited reporters into her home, fighting back the tears.

"The reason I've been talking to all you guys is that I don't want my daughter's legacy to be 'no comment ... because she wasn't a 'no comment' person,'" she said. "Her legacy is: Be passionate and be involved in what you believe in. And do it as thoroughly and honestly and fearlessly as you can."

A graduate of Yale University, Colvin had never planned to be a journalist. She had studied anthropology, later taking the rigorous study of people and places and putting it to good use writing about individuals caught up in suffering to relay the horror of war.

"Our mission is to speak the truth to power," she said during a tribute service for slain journalists at Fleet Street's St. Bride's Church in November 2010. "We send home that first rough draft of history. We can and do make a difference in exposing the horrors of war and especially the atrocities that befall civilians."

Colvin's death comes only days after two other respected journalists died while reporting on the uprising against Syria's president, Bashar Assad. Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Anthony Shadid, a correspondent for The New York Times, died last week of an apparent asthma attack while slipping out of Syria.

Award-winning French TV reporter Gilles Jacquier was killed in an explosion in Homs on Jan. 11, becoming the first Western journalist to die since the uprising began. His colleagues believe he was murdered in an elaborate trap set up by Syrian authorities ? a claim that Assad's government has denied.

Colvin lost the sight in one eye during an ambush in Sri Lanka in 2001 but promised not to "hang up my flak jacket" and kept reporting on the world's most troubled places. She was matter of fact about the injury during the tribute at St. Bride's, as she described how authorities will try to keep the truth out of the headlines.

"I had gone to the northern Tamil area from which journalists were banned and found an unreported humanitarian disaster," she said. "As I was smuggled back across the internal border, a soldier launched a grenade at me and the shrapnel sliced into my face and chest. He knew what he was doing."

British Prime Minister David Cameron led the tributes to Colvin, telling lawmakers in the House of Commons that the death of the "talented and respected foreign correspondent" was "a desperately sad reminder of the risks journalists take to inform the world of what is happening and the dreadful events in Syria."

Author Salman Rushdie, who spent years in hiding from death threats, sent a message to his followers on Twitter, noting that it was "dreadful news. A great reporter, fine writer and fearless woman is gone. Her many friends are devastated."

Colvin's boss, media mogul Rupert Murdoch, described her as "one of the most outstanding foreign correspondents of her generation."

But the tributes also described a woman intent on living life to the full. She was often compared to pioneering war correspondent Martha Gellhorn ? gutsy and glamorous, taking each day as it came.

"She lived life passionately," said BBC correspondent Lyse Doucet. "Great shoes, great journalism."

Recover iPod data on Mac - Pod Camp Chi Computers Blog

iPod data recovery, recover iPod data, mac data recovery, recover mac data, mac data recovery software, free mac data recovery, mac data loss, mac data recovery method

I believe lots of digital enthusiasts and honest apple fans know something about iPod, which belongs to portable multifunctional digital multi-media player series developed by Apple Inc.. Apple Inc. gives very simple but user-friendly interface to all players of the series. Except the iPod touch and the sixth iPod nano, most of the products can be operated through an annular scroll wheel. In the early days, most of the iPod products used the internal hard disk as storage media. Now, only iPod classic still uses this storage method. iPod nano, iPod shuffle and iPod touch all turn to using flash memory as its main storage media.????????

?

Nowadays, the data information is more and more important, so iPod is not only a piece of multifunctional digital multi-media player, but also a kind of very portable computer external storage device. We usually store some important and frequently-used data in iPod to facilitate taking and using the important data at any time. However, since iPod doesn?t have anti-virus prevention measures as the same as computer have, iPod which usually exchanges data among different computers is very likely to be attacked by virus. This situation may cause important iPod data loss, which I once encountered.?

?

I loved music very much, and because I liked Apple products very much, I bought a piece of iPod touch. As soon as I gained it, I was attracted by its powerful function and applications, so I always kept it with me. I usually stored some important and frequently-used work data in iPod touch to facilitate ?? consulting and using. However, unexpected thing happened. Once when I was using iPod touch to view webpage through Wi-Fi, my iPod touch suddenly crashed. I had never encountered such a kind of situation, so I was very amazed and I immediately rebooted it. The whole rebooting operation was very successful, but just when I was to relax, I suddenly felt it so depressed for the next problem.???????

?

After successfully rebooting the iPod touch, I unintentionally visited the folder storing important work data on my iPod touch, but the result was very unsatisfying. Although the folder still existed in original location, all the important data in folder disappeared. I immediately connected iPod touch to my Mac computer, thinking maybe the iPod touch operating system faults cause the important data to fail to display. However, the fact was not as simple as what I thought ? the important data which can?t be seen on iPod touch also can?t be displayed on my Mac computer. At this time, I began to suppose iPod touch was infected with virus, so I searched for answers on the Internet. The result was expected that a user who had the similar suffering shared his suffering with me as well as his iPod data recovery suffering on Mac. Through his introduction, I fast found a piece of professional Mac data recovery software MiniTool Mac Data Recovery. After learning something about this software, I performed the iPod data recovery operations step by step according to the detailed software operation prompt, and successfully recovered lost iPod data.???????

?

Here, I thank this friend who shared me with the unlucky suffering and the software development company that provides professional Mac data recovery software. Here, I share my suffering with you, hoping to help users who encounter similar situation.? ?

Iowa women's track looking forward to security of home

By Cody Goodwin
cody-goodwin@uiowa.edu

The Iowa women?s track and field team will return home for the final time this indoor season when it hosts the Iowa Invitational at the Recreation Building today, starting at 5 p.m.

The Hawkeyes will play host to six other colleges, all from near and around the home state. Simpson College, Central College, Northern Iowa, Western Illinois, St. Ambrose, and Drake will all be in attendance for today?s meet.

But the competition probably won?t matter for Iowa, because the last two times the Hawkeyes were at home ? the intrasquad and New Year?s Classic meets ? Iowa?s women tracksters performed at their peaks.

More than seven personal records were set between the two meets. And when it was actual competition, the Black and Gold won first place in the New Year?s Classic.

Being back home should only bring confidence to the Hawkeyes ? and in good time, too. The Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships are only a week away.

?This [meet] will give us the confidence we need to do better,? Nicole Erickson said.

Erickson, a senior, said she realizes how different Iowa has been at home when compared to its results on the road. And with only a short time until the conference meet, she knows Iowa is going to have to make some adjustments in order to perform next weekend in Lincoln, Neb.

The women tracksters will try to build up even more confidence for next weekend. Iowa went to a meet hosted by the Cornhuskers earlier this year, and Erickson believes the experience on Nebraska?s banked track will only help the team.

?Knowing who the team is now, and what we have to do ? and having run on Nebraska?s track before ? I think we can be a lot more successful,? Erickson said.

Coming home before the Big Tens will only help build that confidence, several Hawkeyes said. Many of the coaches believe there?s a greater sense of comfort when the team is at home.

That can only keep the team mesh, assistant coach Clive Roberts said.

?The girls are kind of getting along with each other ? not that they hadn?t before ? and having good relationships plays a part in it,? he said.

Those good relationships will prove to be vital for the team as a whole. And Roberts can see it, both on and off the track.

When the athletes are in tune and connected with one another, they tend to cheer for one another and hold a team-first mindset. When they aren?t, they?re more individual and focus solely on themselves.

?The girls are getting along now and are focusing with each other on a common goal,? he said. ?Only time will tell.?

That kind of mindset leaks down to even the younger athletes on the team. Freshman Victoria Sack believes that today?s meet can be the difference between a good and bad ending to the season.

?Everyone has to give everything,? she said. ?We need a little bit more confidence. We just have to start believing.?

And what does she think it?ll take in order to ?believe? before the Big Ten championships?

?Show effort, give everything that we have,? the freshman said. ?Sacrifice everything.?

Parasitic wasp no match for drunken fruit fly

Fruit flies can apparently out-drink Frank the Tank and not get sick from alcohol poisoning. Now researchers have found this fraternity-party ability may save flies from a gory death.

The results showed that drunk fruit-fly larvae turned the tables by killing wasp parasites in their bloodstream, essentially causing the parasite's organs to drain from its anus, the researchers found.

Fruit fly larvae feed on the yeast and other fungi from rotting, or fermenting, fruit; during their snacking, the flies are bound to ingest the boozy byproducts of the fungi's fermentation ? they are even able to use it as a food source and thrive on food with up to 4 percent alcohol.

Higher alcohol levels can be toxic to the fruit flies, study researcher Todd Schlenke, an assistant professor at Emory University, told LiveScience. "If the alcohol level gets too high, they can't break it down fast enough." The flies in the study reached only about 0.02 percent blood alcohol levels; they would have to drink four times that to reach the blood alcohol level considered illegal for driving.

This idyllic existence on a booze-soaked piece of fruit is often disrupted by parasites, including wasps that lay their larvae in the larva of the fruit fly. If untreated, the tiny wasps eat the flies from the inside out, bursting from the flies' bloodstream fully formed. The researchers have discovered, though, that the flies use their naturally high tolerance to alcohol to kill off their blood bugs.

In the study, when the wasps tried to lay their eggs in fly larvae on food containing 6 percent alcohol, they were less likely to lay eggs, "presumably because they are feeling bad," Schlenke said. The eggs they did lay were less likely to survive.

"If you dissect open a fly that was fed alcohol food, the wasps were obviously dead and in a lot of cases the internal organs in the wasp larvae had fallen out the wasp's anus," Schlenke said. "They were turned inside out." Now that's a bad hangover.

When infected larvae are placed in a dish with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic food, they even make a break for the alcohol to reduce their parasite load: After 24 hours, 80 percent of the infected fly larvae were hanging out on the alcohol side of the dish, but only 30 percent of the uninfected larvae were.

"We gave them a choice between food with alcohol and food without alcohol, and the infected flies overwhelmingly went to consume the toxic alcohol food," Schlenke said. It's as if the flies ask themselves, "Do I want to suffer from toxic levels of alcohol or do I want to die from this wasp?"

The study was published Thursday in the journal Current Biology.

Santorum's tax returns show rise in wealth

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum released four years of federal income tax returns on Wednesday night, showing a sharp rise in his personal wealth spurred by his growing work as Washington-based corporate consultant and media commentator.

Santorum's returns show that his federal income taxes rose from 2007, when he paid $167,000, to $310,000 in 2009, then dropped to $263,000 in 2010. During that same period, his annual income surged from nearly $660,000 in 2007 to $1.1 million in 2009 before slipping to $923,000 in 2010.

Santorum, 53, has sold himself in the Republican primaries as both a Washington outsider and a social conservative, stressing his family's coal-mining background and his appeal to religious and working-class voters. His personal finances tell a different story, detailing the trajectory of a politician who grew more prosperous in the Senate and became a millionaire afterwards, at times capitalizing on his Beltway connections.

His 2010 tax returns show he made more than $550,000 in media and consulting fees ? paid to him through a corporation he set up, Excelsior LLC. The previous year, Santorum made more than $820,000 in fees, also paid through the same firm.

Santorum's wealth doesn't come close to the multimillion-dollar fortune amassed by Mitt Romney's high-finance prowess or Newt Gingrich's smaller but still-lucrative blend of foundation and consulting work. But his newfound affluence reflects his close ties to Washington's business and lobbying circles during his 12 years in the Senate and his smooth transition into their world after he left office.

Both Romney and Gingrich recently disclosed income tax returns.

Last year, the former Pennsylvania senator disclosed investment and real estate assets totaling as much as $2.5 million. In his presidential financial disclosure spanning 18 months between 2010 and 2011, Santorum also listed $1.3 million in income as a consultant ? much of it coming from media appearances and corporate work on behalf of health care, energy and social conservative interests.

Rising to GOP leadership in the Senate as Republican Conference chairman, Santorum pushed to expand the influence of Republican-leaning business interests. As conference chairman, he headed GOP Senate communications efforts and met regularly with GOP-leaning business and lobbying figures. He raised more than $550,000 from lobbyists during his unsuccessful 2006 Senate re-election campaign.

After his Senate defeat, Santorum did not register as a lobbyist, but he aided corporate and other interests as a consultant. He was paid $142,500 by Consol Energy, a Pennsylvania-based energy firm with numerous Appalachian coal mines. The firm has lobbied against Obama administration efforts to tighten limits on greenhouse gas emissions.

Santorum also was paid $65,000 by the American Continental Group, a D.C. lobbying firm with an assortment of corporate clients, and $125,000 by the Clapham Group, a Virginia firm that aids religious rights organizations. He benefitted from media work, paid $230,000 for appearances on Fox News, as well as more than $80,000 for stints as a radio commentator.

Santorum was also paid nearly $400,000 in compensation and stock options as a board director at Universal Health Services, a hospital management firm, after he left the Senate in 2006. He also owns up to $250,000 in Universal stock. As a senator, Santorum had sponsored several unsuccessful bills that would have secured more Medicaid funding hospitals run by Universal and other medical firms in Puerto Rico.

Santorum also owns five rental properties in State College, Pa., worth $500,000 and $1.25 million, but also with as much as $750,000 in mortgage debt, according to his presidential disclosure. His taxes show that he took mortgage and depreciation deductions on those properties, and also that he sold more than $23,000 worth of stocks in 2010.

Santorum and his wife, Karen, took standard deductions each year for their seven children, the returns show. In 2007, the Santorums took a $4,000 charity deduction for giving away "clothing, footwear, accessories and household items." That year, the family moved into a larger home in the Virginia suburbs of Washington.

Santorum and his family now live in a four-bedroom northern Virginia house on five acres assessed at $1.4 million in 2010.

Ind. measles outbreak illustrates disease risk ? Artesia News

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Indiana is battling its second measles outbreak in two years, even though its vaccination rate exceeds the national average. Health officials say the cases, traced to a Super Bowl event, illustrate just how vulnerable the public is to exposure from sources at home and abroad.

The 13 cases confirmed this month by state health officials have been confined to two counties, Boone and Hamilton. But all cases are linked to two infected people who visited the Super Bowl Village together on Feb. 3, prompting Indiana officials to reach out to health departments in New York and Massachusetts ? home of the participating New England Patriots and New York Giants ? for fear that the outbreak could spread across state lines.

Concerns about a widespread outbreak are well-founded, said University of Minnesota professor Kristen Ehresmann, who was part of a research team that studied the disease?s spread across a large sporting event.

In 1991, a track and field runner from Argentina participating in the Special Olympics in Minneapolis unknowingly started an outbreak of measles, infecting spectators, athletes and event organizers.

?This was kind of Murphy?s Law of disease transmission, with a highly infectious disease in a very, very crowded place so as to spread the disease as much as possible,? Ehresmann said.

The Super Bowl setting has the same potential to spread the notoriously infectious disease, even though health officials in 2000 declared endemic measles ? cases of the disease that originated in the United States ? to be eliminated, due largely to increasing vaccination rates.

About 90 percent of all Americans are vaccinated against measles, said Dr. Greg Wallace of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And in Indiana, more than 92 percent of children ages 19 months to 35 months received the vaccine in 2010, the latest year for which figures are available.

But concerns over the vaccine?s safety ? widely dismissed by researchers as unfounded ? have led some parents to decide against immunizing their children. In 2005, an outbreak of 34 measles cases in Indiana were traced back to a group of parents who didn?t vaccinate their children, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

In other countries, vaccination rates are dropping, which raises the risk of exposure. The number of cases in Western Europe has particularly spiked, with France reporting the third-highest number of measles cases in the world. More than 750 people have contracted measles in an ongoing outbreak in Qu?bec, Canada, despite the country?s high immunization rate.

The U.S. typically sees about 50 cases of measles each year. But there were 223 cases in 2011 ? a 15-year high. Officials said the increase was due to Americans picking up the disease while abroad. Three-quarters of U.S. measles cases can be traced to importation, with the rest originating from contact with a visitor from another country, Wallace said.

Indiana?s outbreak has prompted state health officials to issue near-daily updates on the number of cases and places visited by those infected in hopes of stopping the disease?s spread. In Noblesville, where a suspected measles case has been reported, school officials have been cleaning classrooms and canceling evening activities. Spokeswoman Sharon Trisler said 98 percent of Noblesville students are immunized against the disease, and the rest are being asked to get the vaccine.

Wallace said health departments are typically able to control outbreaks as long as they catch them early, and doesn?t predict a large-scale resurgence of measles in Indiana so long as immunization rates remain steady.

Ehresmann hopes news reports of cases at the Super Bowl remind people that measles are dangerous and contagious.

?You never know when it?s possible to have an exposure,? she said. ?Who would think the Super Bowl would have any link or tie to the measles??
