Sun Hung Kai dives as billionaire Kwok brothers arrested

HONG KONG (Reuters) - More than $5 billion was wiped off the market value of Sun Hung Kai Properties <0016.HK> on Friday, after the billionaire owners of Asia's largest real estate developer were arrested on suspicion of corruption.

Hong Kong's Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) arrested Raymond and Thomas Kwok in the agency's biggest investigation since it was set up in 1974 to root out what was seen as widespread corruption in the government and police.

Rafael Hui, a former No.2 official in the government, was also arrested, according to media reports. Hui resigned as an independent director of insurer AIA Group <1299.HK> late on Thursday.

The arrests on Thursday come just days after Hong Kong elected Beijing-loyalist Leung Chun-ying as its next leader, pledging land for cheaper public housing, and as soaring property prices, the most expensive in the world, have stirred public discontent. Home prices almost doubled in the five years to end-2011, according to real estate broker Knight Frank.

"This is not good for the image of Hong Kong, which used to have a high reputation for integrity," said Joseph Wong, a former senior government official and colleague of Hui. "The impression is that government policies tend to favor the rich tycoons, particularly rich property developers. These sort of cases will only add to the suspicions."

The two Kwok brothers and Hui were released late on Thursday but were expected to return for more questioning, according to a source familiar with the matter. Local media reporters said the brothers were still inside a Deepwater Bay luxury compound on the south side of Hong Kong on Friday.

The Kwoks are worth $18.3 billion, according to Forbes magazine, the second-biggest family fortune in Hong Kong after Asia's richest man, Li Ka-shing, founder of rival developer Cheung Kong (Holdings) <0001.HK>.

Shares in Sun Hung Kai slumped more than 15 percent to 15-week lows when they resumed trading on Friday. The company owns some of the former British colony's largest properties, including its tallest building, the International Commerce Centre that houses Morgan Stanley and the Ritz Carlton.

"This is justice. They're among the biggest, richest men in Hong Kong. The power of the property sector is too strong, but the business-government connection is the same around the world," Terry So,?an elderly chauffeur, told Reuters near the Sun Hung Kai Centre.

BUSINESS AS USUAL

Sun Hung Kai said the Kwoks would continue with their duties as chairmen and managing directors, and normal business operations would not be affected.

In the past two weeks, Sun Hung Kai has also disclosed that Thomas Chan Kui-yuen, in charge of project planning and land acquisitions, had been arrested for suspected bribery, and Chan Kai-ming, executive director of architectural and engineering services, had died, peacefully - meaning of the company's seven executive board members, three have been arrested, and one has died.

Hui, who, according to the Hong Kong Jockey Club website, has owned eight racehorses - two co-owned with Henry Tang, a loser in this month's leadership election - has been a long time adviser to Sun Hung Kai and has known the Kwoks since childhood.

Details of what is behind the arrests remain unclear.

The South China Morning Post reported that the ICAC was looking into suspected debts of more than HK$100 million ($12.9 million) linked to Hui, and a related, unsecured loan of HK$50 million.

Hui was Chief Secretary under Hong Kong's leader Donald Tsang in 2005-07, a post that would entitle him to government housing. But he chose to stay in his 4,000 square foot Leighton Hill apartment - a pink and tan marble residential tower that overlooks the Happy Valley racecourse and was developed by Sun Hung Kai.

The unfolding scandal has gripped Hong Kong, the world's most densely populated city which was returned to Chinese rule by the British in 1997.

"It's a sign they're trying to shift the power away from the tycoons," said Alaric Lau, a 45-year-old independent investor in equities and fixed income, who was walking near Hui's residence.

"These are three very prominent people in Hong Kong. The arrests are a sign of how they want to do things going forward ... there's no more favoritism that extends beyond the law ... it's a sign that the Chinese government is changing."

The potential conflict of interest in a senior government official living - rent-free, according to media reports - in an upscale residence owned by an influential property family has not escaped public and media attention.

"We always assumed there was something between property and government. Maybe there'll be more scandals.?I think it's a starting point in changing the relationship between government and developers," said Joe Lin, a young marketing professional, during a smoking break near the Sun Hung Kai offices.

Earlier this month, Tsang rejected allegations of ethics violations stemming from a yacht trip with tycoons and the controversial rental of a luxury flat in neighboring Shenzhen.

FAMILY FEUD

The Kwok family had a public feud in 2008 that ended with elder brother Walter being ousted as chairman. Thomas and Raymond, backed by their mother, claimed Walter was mentally unfit to run the business, claims Walter has denied.

That aside, the Kwok brothers - Thomas runs the company's construction and engineering departments, while Raymond looks after legal and financial issues - have a relatively low media profile.

Both are devout Christians, with Thomas the driving force behind a Noah's Ark replica theme park which opened in 2009.

A former company employee who didn't want to be named, said he was "very surprised and very sad" at the arrests. "They are men of integrity. Thomas would always repeat the company's mission - Building Homes with Heart - during meetings and ask staff to treat clients with a true heart," he said.

Others also expressed concern about the impact on Hong Kong's reputation for corporate governance.

"It's demoralizing to see another senior government official has been implicated in questionable behavior," said Jamie Allen, Secretary General of the Asian Corporate Governance Association. "Corporate governance rests on a foundation of clean and strong public government. If people start asking questions about the ethics of senior government officials, then they will start having more doubts about corporate governance."

A loan banker in Hong Kong, who asked not to be named as his bank is a lender to Sun Hung Kai, said there was unlikely to be any significant impact on the company's business.

"No one's going to start cutting their credit lines to the company. Sun Hung Kai isn't going bust because of this. It's not a (mainland Chinese) mid-cap, but a Hong Kong blue-chip with hard assets and very low gearing."

WALTER'S WRIT

In a writ filed in Hong Kong in 2008 as part of his bid to avoid his ouster, Walter Kwok said his brothers repeatedly disagreed with his attempts to improve management at the company. He also said he tried to investigate the sale of a parcel of land in Hong Kong's New Territories at more than the asking price, and look into why construction contracts awarded by Sun Hung Kai went to a select number of contractors.

"There's speculation that ... Walter sort of informed the ICAC that his two younger brothers could be in trouble. Those reports appeared before (last weekend's) Election Day," said Joseph Cheng, a professor in Chinese and Hong Kong politics at the City University of Hong Kong.

"I don't think we should connect this to CY Leung or read too much into the date," he told Reuters by telephone.

Gary Plowman, a former government prosecutor, said he had been to the ICAC and was representing one of the arrested parties, whom he declined to identify. "Nobody has been charged," he said.

"You wouldn't expect the ICAC to go after targets with as high a profile as these three unless they thought they were on fairly firm ground," said barrister Kevin Egan.

The ICAC had an 88 percent conviction rate on the 443 people it prosecuted in 2010.

Over the past four decades, Sun Hung Kai, listed in 1972, has built some of Hong Kong's most expensive property, from luxury hilltop apartment blocks and harbor-front skyscrapers to landmark office buildings.

The company's net profit has soared to HK$48 billion ($6.18 billion) in the year to last June from $10.4 billion two years earlier.

Police: Two TSA agents held in drunken rampage

A pair of South Florida TSA agents face criminal charges after police say they went on a drunken rampage inside a Miami Beach hotel room, throwing furniture out a window and wildly firing a gun, NBCMiami.com reported.

Jeffrey Piccolella, 27, and Nicholas Puccio, 25, are both charged with criminal mischief and using a firearm under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the Tuesday night incident at the Shelby Hotel, according to a Miami Beach police report obtained by NBCMiami.com.

Officers called to the hotel around 11 p.m. after reports of a gun being discharged from a second-floor room took the two agents into custody without incident, the report said. Each had a strong breath odor of alcohol and bloodshot and watery eyes, the report said.

On the ground outside the hotel room, officers found a radio, speakers, two lamps, a phone, an ice chest, a shattered vase and a bullet casing, the report said.

Piccolella admitted that the pair had returned to the room after having several drinks and started throwing the items out the window, the report said.

Piccolella said he had fired the gun out the window once, handed it to Puccio, who also fired once, and then got the gun back and fired three more times, according to the report.

One bullet struck a $1,500 hurricane-proof window at the Barneys New York at 832 Collins Ave., the report said. The hotel items were worth $400, it said.

Puccio denied any involvement in the incident, the report said.

The Transportation Safety Administration said both are part-time employees at Palm Beach International Airport and were not traveling on official business.

"TSA holds its employees to the highest professional and ethical standards. We will review the facts and take appropriate action as necessary," the TSA said in a statement obtained by NBCMiami.com.

Both Piccolella, of West Palm Beach, and Puccio, of Delray Beach, were being held on $5,500 bond, NBC Miami said.

Elvuyra Perez Gallego, visiting Miami from Spain for the first time, told NBCMiami.com?she was scared when she came back to the hotel from a late night out and saw police blocking the street surrounding her hotel.

She said she has sat on the hotel patio many times this week to use her computer and socialize, and she doesn't like thinking about what could happen with a stray bullet.

Even a typical weekend night spent on Sixth Street in Austin, Texas, is not for the faint of heart. But when the music portion of South by Southwest took over the city recently, the entire downtown area exploded with throngs of hipsters, dueling sound-clouds of music from nearby stages, and all the free sponsored beer one?s heart might desire.

Little did out-of-town passersby know, there was a dark, calm oasis hidden right in the eye of the storm. Midnight Cowboy, a brothel shut down just last year, was recently purchased by Tim League ? the mind behind Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, a chain of movie theaters that serve alcohol ? and reopened as a speakeasy-style bar.

Classic cocktails and creative spin-offs have made as big a comeback in Austin as they have throughout the rest of the country. But even though speakeasy-style bars have been popping up all over bigger cities like New York and San Francisco for some time, this is Austin?s first covert-cocktail venture ? and how fitting that its space had a dark side until just recently.

The location previously had a sign advertising ?Midnight Cowboy Modeling and Oriental Massage? but now stands unmarked, save for the single red light kept at the front door. Reservations must be made in advance online, and the website lists a number that? gives further instructions for entering by ringing a doorbell labeled ?Harry Craddock? ? named after the Prohibition-era mixologist who fled the States to bar-tend at London?s Savoy Hotel.

The 48-seat lounge gets its vintage feel from tall, black leather booth seating, marble tables, tin ceiling tiles and the late 19th century-style bar, where a sculpted patron saint of prostitutes looks on. Eye-level mirrors border the room, which is lit by wall sconces that glow like embers; exposed brick walls reach toward the ceiling as a reminder of the swanky lounge?s sordid past. Three former ?massage rooms? in the back have even been converted into cozy private rooms for six to eight patrons at a time.

Drinks range from the refreshing Kalamazoo Julep (Dutch jenever, housemade celery syrup, celery leaves, mint) to the boozy and Lindsey?s Lament (single-barrel bourbon, Becherovka, maple, salt tincture, orange oils). Savory and sweet notes are perfectly balanced in both the innovative Joe Buck (Texas Blue Corn Whiskey, mustard syrup, smoked paprika, fresh lemon, ginger beer) and the frothy Pisco Sourgrass (Peruvian pisco, lemon, sorrel-honey syrup, tiki bitters, egg white, cracked black pepper).

Some drinks are also concocted at the table by knowledgeable bartenders, using an arsenal of ingredients and instruments drawn from a rolling cart. ?When we saw the room and started to think about what the design was going to look like, it felt like a train car to me,? said beverage director Bill Norris. ?So ? they?re based around the old Pullman bar carts.?

Norris also looks forward to using the back patio to grow citrus trees and herbs, making for truly hyper-local bar ingredients. ?It?s not so much about the menu in here for me,? he mused. ?When you?re walking down the street ? and you get in here, it?s just sort of that aaah feeling. And (we want) the drinks to be an extension of that aaah feeling.?

At Easter time it can be quite tempting to buy a cute little bunny rabbit or a fluffy chick, especially since they seem to be around everywhere in springtime. However even small animals can be trickier to look after than you would expect, and they can live for ten years or more.

Often in the weeks and months after Easter animal rescue centres get an influx of unwanted or abandoned animals. We?re here to give you some advice to make sure your new pet doesn?t become one of them.

Everyone has heard the slogans about dogs and cats being for life ? well, small animals are no different. Parents in particular need to think about whether they are prepared to take on the responsibility of a rabbit or bird when the novelty wears off for their children. It may seem like a small extra task but on top of teenage children or other pets it can quickly become a chore for anyone.

Pets like rabbits or chickens need a lot of space and some company. Ideally both need a garden with a hutch, or coop, and a decent size run. If kept inside they can quickly become frustrated. You can buy nice hutches and coops from pet stores, or alternatively you can make them if you?ve got someone around who?s a bit handy with DIY. Just make sure that the pet can be locked away securely at night time and that foxes or cats can?t get to them. If using chicken wire don?t forget the bottom of the run. You don?t want your pets burrowing out or other animals getting in.

As for company, rabbits especially should be kept in pairs or groups. Same-sex pairs are your best bet as rabbits will soon breed if kept in mixed pairs. It?s often difficult to sex young rabbits so it?s definitely worth taking them to the vet to be spayed or neutered just to be on the safe side.

Birds and rabbits have different personalities and some are shy or timid. It?s probably worth bearing this in mind if you have very young children that won?t understand this, or other pets already, such as cats and dogs.

Most pet shops can offer you help and advice on small animals, but when it comes to buying one perhaps checking out your local animal rescue centre is a good bet. Most have rabbits that need to be re-housed and they can be spayed or neutered before you take them home.

Small pets don?t just need time and attention; they need money spent on them too. It?s important to ensure that you can afford to take care of your pet if it becomes ill or injured: vet bills can be costly for any animal. Some animal insurers now offer policies for small animals which might be worth considering.

Most of all, animals need love and care, not just when they are small and cute but when they grow up too, so make sure you?re ready for the commitment. Your new pet will depend on you to look after it and keep it happy for its whole life, not just Easter.

Genetics of flu susceptibility

A genetic finding could help explain why influenza becomes a life-threating disease to some people while it has only mild effects in others. New research led by the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute has identified for the first time a human gene that influences how we respond to influenza infection.

People who carry a particular variant of a gene called IFITM3 are significantly more likely to be hospitalised when they fall ill with influenza than those who carry other variants, the team found. This gene plays a critical role in protecting the body against infection with influenza and a rare version of it appears to make people more susceptible to severe forms of the disease. The results are published in the journal Nature.

A central question about viruses is why some people suffer badly from an infection and others do not. IFITM3 is an important protein that protects cells against virus infection and is thought to play a critical role in the immune system's response against such viruses as H1N1 pandemic influenza, commonly known as 'swine flu'. When the protein is present in large quantities, the spread of the virus in lungs is hindered, but if the protein is defective or absent, the virus can spread more easily, causing severe disease.

"Although this protein is extremely important in limiting the spread of viruses in cells, little is known about how it works in lungs," explains Aaron Everitt, first author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "Our research plays a fundamental part in explaining how both the gene and protein are linked to viral susceptibility."

The antiviral role of IFITM3 in humans was first suggested by studies using a genetic screen, which showed that the protein blocked the growth of influenza virus and dengue virus in cells. This led the team to ask whether IFITM3 protected mice from viral infections. They removed the IFITM3 gene in mice and found that once they contracted influenza, the symptoms became much more severe compared to mice with IFITM3. In effect, they found the loss of this single gene in mice can turn a mild case of influenza into a fatal infection.

The researchers then sequenced the IFITM3 genes of 53 patients hospitalised with influenza and found that some have a genetic mutant form of IFITM3, which is rare in normal people. This variant gene encodes a shortened version of the protein which makes cells more susceptible to viral infection.

"Since IFITM3 appears to be a first line defender against infection, our efforts suggest that individuals and populations with less IFITM3 activity may be at increased risk during a pandemic and that IFITM3 could be vital for defending human populations against other viruses such as avian influenza virus and dengue virus" says Dr. Abraham Brass, co-senior author and Assistant Professor at the Ragon Institute and Gastrointestinal Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital.

This research was a collaboration between institutes in the United States and the United Kingdom. The samples for this study were obtained from the MOSAIC consortium in England and Scotland, co-ordinated from the Centre for Respiratory Infection (CRI) at Imperial College London, and the GenISIS consortium in Scotland at the Roslin Institute of the University of Edinburgh. These were pivotal for the human genetics component of the work.

"Collectively, these data reveal that the action of a single antiviral protein, IFITM3, can profoundly alter the course of the flu and potentially other viruses in both human and mouse," explains Professor Paul Kellam, co-senior author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "To fully understand how both the protein and gene control our susceptibility to viral infections, we need to study the mechanisms of the gene variant more closely.

"Our research is important for people who have this variant as we predict their immune defences could be weakened to some virus infections. Ultimately as we learn more about the genetics of susceptibility to viruses, then people can take informed precautions, such as vaccination to prevent infection."

Sir Mark Walport, director of the Wellcome Trust, said: "During the recent swine flu pandemic, many people found it remarkable that the same virus could provoke only mild symptoms in most people, while, more rarely, threatening the lives of others. This discovery points to a piece of the explanation: genetic variations affect the way in which different people respond to infection.

"This important research adds to a growing scientific understanding that genetic factors affect the course of disease in more than one way. Genetic variations in a virus can increase its virulence, but genetic variations in that virus's host ? us ? matter greatly as well."

Now, three years later, Rihanna and Brown have steadily been rebuilding a relationship, and the seriousness of domestic violence is taking a backseat to their ?love life.?

Though it brought domestic violence to the spotlight, this relationship should not be the example for others. It shows young girls that after being hurt, physically and emotionally, it is okay to return to the abuser who is potentially still dangerous.

?

?Based on my experience with people in similar situations, I think Chris Brown has some deep, dark, unresolved issues, and he made a vicious attack on that woman,? said a Washington D.C. lawyer involved with numerous domestic abuse cases, who asked to remain anonymous so as not to endanger the privacy of former clients. ?He didn?t smack her, he beat her. He hit her multiple times, savagely. I have every reason to believe that he will go on to do it again in life.?

?

To some, emotional abuse is as damaging as physical abuse and many women and girls are affected by emotional abuse every day.

?

According to Rockville psychiatrist Lois Hartman, this abuse is defined as someone using words to destroy a person?s self-esteem and crush one?s spirit.

?

?After someone gets out of an abusive relationship, it is best to just stay away from the abuser,? Hartman said. ?If they have displayed abusive behavior it means they are capable of doing it again. If someone has a history of being abusive, you should just stay away.?

?

Because emotional abuse does not leave physical marks, it is not easy to know it is happening or prove it is happening unless there are witnesses. Therefore, many people do not acknowledge or understand emotional abuse.

?

According to counselor Peggy Fahey, any type of abuse is difficult to talk about but one should go to a trusted adult over a peer because adults can help.

?

?It?s like bullying,? Fahey said. ?Sometimes there is more going on than we actually see. It is important to speak to an adult, whether it?s a counselor or just a trusted adult.?

?

Students at CHS have different views on the subject of emotional abuse. According to junior Agya Adadey, emotional abuse is not an issue at CHS and is not as serious as cases of physical abuse. He believes if someone is feeling abused he or she should simply tell somebody. However, not everyone agrees with him.

?

?Just because you are not physically putting your hands on someone doesn?t mean you are not hurting them,? said a female sophomore who was involved in abusive relationships in the past.

?

The student believes emotional abuse is an issue between CHS couples, and that people need to be made aware.

?

However, many agree that victims have different tolerance levels for what they can and cannot take, leading them to take drastic measures.

?

?When people are abused there generally may be a mental illness that goes along with it,? Hartman said. ?They can experience depression or anxiety. Also, they often drink alcohol or use drugs because it will help them feel numb and not feel the hurt and pain.?

?

Another effect of emotional abuse, destroying another?s self-esteem, leads the victim to believe no one would want to help him or her.

?

Yet, Hartman stresses how important it is to reach out.

?

?People in abusive relationships should get help, and they should know that they are not alone,? Hartman said. ?They need to speak up and go to someone they trust because life will get better. And of course, have hope.?
